Battered but Unbowed: the Canadian Welfare State @ 140 McLaughlin College, Senior Common Room | Toronto | Ontario | Canada

This talk will explore a number of questions. What is a welfare state? Is there a Canadian style? What are the alternatives to the welfare state? Why are there so many misconceptions about the welfare state? Has neo-liberalism rolled back the welfare state? Why don’t progressives acknowledge the resilience and successes of the Canadian welfare state? Why can’t Canada fill the gaps in its welfare state?
