Abstract: How does visual attention shift? How are shifts of visual attention guided toward individuals’ goals? To answer these questions, I argue, we must understand the role of a control system - executive functioning - in regulating deployments of visual attention. Executive functioning is a componential realizer of individuals’ capacity to guide their attention shifts toward their goals. I sketch how this result bears on our understanding of visual attention, vision, and agency.
