This talk will look at some recent responses to Euripides’ late play The Bacchae, one of the most arresting works of the classical repertory, to ask about the availability of the play to contemporary audiences, including non-Western ones. The two productions are both recent and New Zealand based: one a group-devised student production, the other a collaborative Greek-Māori production given in te reo, using Māori analogues of ancient Greek fictions.
