These alumni will talk about their entrepreneurship journey, and specifically how one overcomes adversities including financing a start-up, time management, and even navigating a pandemic. · Anil Taneja, Commerce 2010, Managing Director at Palm Holdings
Taneja is the managing director of an institutional grade real estate portfolio with a specialization in Hotels. His day to day responsibilities include managing the strategic direction of the company’s management services division, Palm Hospitality, and construction division, Palm Construction. Taneja is the current president and board member and trustree for Trinity Hotels inc. and board member and finance chair of Young Presidents Organization Toronto. He is also the founding member of the Palm Holdings Family Foundation and is recognized by KPMG and Globe and Mail as One of Canadas Top Entrepreneurs (2016). Taneja is also the winner of IHG’s developer of the year (2016) and Marriott developer of the year (2015).
· Matt Golden, BA, Economics 1992, Founder and Managing Partner at Golden Ventures
Golden is the founder and managing partner of Golden Ventures, a leading seed stage venture capital fund based in Toronto and investing across North America. Golden is an experienced entrepreneur and venture capitalist and has been engaged in all aspects of building and guiding disruptive companies from their very early stages. Golden was previously a partner at the BlackBerry Partners Fund and the director of new ventures at Brightspark Ventures. From 2001-2008, Golden was a co-founder of Tira Wireless, a mobile games publisher, and content deployment technology and services provider. Prior to entering the startup world, Golden was a lawyer for Osler, one of Canada’s premier law firms.
· Noora Sharrab, BA, Political Science 2007 and MA, Political Science 2010, Co-Founder and CEO at Sitti Social Enterprise
Sharrab obtained her BA and master’s degree in political science with a specialization in refugee and forced migration studies at York University in Toronto, Canada. She co-founded an NGO in 2009 called Hopes for Women in Education (hopesforwomen.org) to provide higher-education scholarships, skills training, and online language development (via Banaat Connect – banaatconnect.org) in the process. She worked for several years with United Nations agencies in Jordan focusing on education, international development, and relief services. Her active role in working with the refugee communities in Jordan pushed her towards fundraising and building a Women’s Centre in the Gaza Refugee Camp in Jerash, Jordan, which currently employs over 16 full-time refugee women in the process, has trained and worked with over hundreds of refugees and served over 1,000 refugees locally in the community in the process. In 2013, Sharrab partnered with Jacqueline Sofia to establish a social enterprise, Sitti Social Enterprise Ltd. (www.sittisoap.com) with the purpose to empower refugee women through employment and to help enhance their opportunity to become financially independent and self-sustainable.
· Richard Reiner, PhD, Philosophy 1993, Founding Partner at CC Stratus Capital
Reiner is a serial entrepreneur and company builder, active as an executive, investor, advisor, and board member. He is currently executive chair of dfuse Platform, a leading blockchain company; executive chair of Fluent.ai, a speech AI company; and Chair of Cybeats, an IoT security company. He was previously chief technology officer - safe identity, in Intel's Security Group. He was president of PasswordBox, the leading digital identity company, leading up to the company’s acquisition by Intel. He was chairman and CEO of Enomaly, a global leader in cloud computing, until Enomaly’s acquisition in 2011; and was the founder, CEO, and CTO of Assurent, a cybersecurity company (acquired in 2006).
· Sharon Zohar, BA, English 1993, CEO/Founder at The Big Push
Zohar is a serial entrepreneur and investor with more than twenty years’ experience founding, investing, advising, and operating technology, internet, and digital media companies. She is driven by her passion to identify new innovative technologies and business models that have the potential to disrupt traditional markets and are designed to improve the human condition. As founder and CEO of the Big Push, a business accelerator for women entrepreneurs, Zohar has developed a unique “Service for Equity” business model dedicated to accelerating the growth of women-led start-ups and preparing them for Series A financing. She leads a diverse group of professionals with years of experience in the areas of finance, design, law, technology, research, sales, and marketing dedicated to supplementing women founders’ own expertise during the critical startup phase.
