Abstract: It is quite often taken for granted that intentions are mental states, that they characteristically cause behaviour, and that intentional action is acting for a reason (typically an intention). I will reject all these claims. Each has problems, and together they make agency a form of self-manipulation. In their place, I will argue for an alternative, but I won’t spoil anything here. This alternative will give us the resources to explain why intention is an important aspect of agency without making it manipulative.
